Sports Betting Guide for Canada

Everything you need to know to bet in an informed and responsible way.

What Is Sports Betting?

Sports betting involves predicting the outcome of sporting events and placing money on that prediction. In Canada, single-event betting has been legal since August 2021 thanks to Bill C-218.

Understanding Odds

Odds represent the probability of an outcome. In Canada, odds are typically in decimal (e.g. 2.50) or American (e.g. +150) format. A decimal odd of 2.50 means a $10 bet returns $25 ($15 profit).

Types of Bets

Moneyline — Bet on who wins. Spread/Handicap — Favourite starts with a point disadvantage. Over/Under — Bet on total score vs a line. Live Betting — Bet during the event. Parlays — Combine multiple selections. Props — Bet on specific events within a game.

Bankroll Management

Set a monthly budget exclusively for betting. Never bet more than 1-5% of your total bankroll on a single bet. Keep a record of all your bets.

Responsible Gambling

Sports betting should be entertainment, never income. Set limits before you start. Help: RGC | ConnexOntario 1-866-531-2600

Gamble Responsibly

Sports betting can be entertaining, but it also involves risks. Set deposit, time and loss limits before you start. If you feel gambling is becoming a problem, seek professional help. Never bet more than you can afford to lose.
