Is Sports Betting Legal in Canada?
Yes. Since August 2021, Bill C-218 (Safe and Regulated Sports
Betting Act) legalized single-event sports betting across all of Canada,
delegating regulation to each province and territory. Before this law, Canadians
could only place parlay bets through provincial platforms.
Provincial Regulation
Ontario is the only province with a fully open market for private
operators, regulated by iGaming Ontario (a subsidiary of the AGCO).
Since its launch in April 2022, over 40 licensed operators compete in Ontario,
including Bet365, Betway, LeoVegas, 888sport and TonyBet.
Other provinces operate through government-run platforms with monopoly status:
PlayNow in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan;
PlayAlberta in Alberta; Mise-o-jeu in Quebec;
and Proline Stadium in the Atlantic provinces.
Minimum Betting Age in Canada
The minimum age varies by province: 18 years in Alberta, Manitoba and
Quebec; 19 years in Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and the
Atlantic provinces. All licensed operators verify user identity and age through
KYC (Know Your Customer) processes.
Taxes on Betting Winnings
One of the great advantages of betting in Canada: sports betting winnings
are not taxed for recreational bettors according to the CRA (Canada Revenue
Agency). Unlike the United States, Canada does not tax gambling winnings as ordinary
income, making it one of the most tax-friendly countries in the world for sports betting.
